Our Typical Day 2012
We have tweaked our rhythm from last year because we've had some life changes. DH's heart transplant really blew my sleep rhythms out of the water and I am only now starting to see some recovery. I used to get up 2-4 hours before my girls have have that time to myself. I haven't been getting up before them and so I've had no alone time which is dangerous territory for an introvert. I've started waking earlier even though I haven't been getting out of bed, so my goal is to work on getting my mornings back. This is the time I take care of Momma's needs and it needs to come back or I will burnout.
The other tweak we've had is ODD's sleep rhythms. The hormones are really kicking in and she can't sleep if she goes to bed at 8:30p like she has all her life. She's been getting ready for bed at the same time as usual, but then staying up until 9:30p. Last April, May & June, I let her sleep until whenever and make-up whatever work she slept through after our joint lessons in the afternoon.
|My plan in iCal for the coming school year|
10a YDD will be starting schoolwork. We start very light with 30 minutes of read to self [which means anything they want at the appropriate reading level - no easy fluff here]. As the girls complete subjects I remove the red boxes from iCal and put in pink boxes for ODD & purple boxes for YDD of what they did. I love using a digital medium for this stuff because it's so easily set up and changed and there is no erase marks from any modifications.
1045a Spelling or Memory Work These are least favorite subjects especially for YDD so I sandwich it between breaks and this is the only 15 minute work period in the day. This has helped get them through the whinys about these subjects.
11a Lunch Break My girls usually make their own lunch with my final approval. I ask them to have a protein, a produce and a carbo; they decide what specific food they want that day. ODD loves to eat sandwiches and finger foods that she can eat while reading. YDD has no pattern. I will cook, but I have independent girls so I often don't. They also usually get 30 minutes of recess with lunch. Some times recess is before or after and even a little before and the rest after.
12p History ODD will be required to be ready to school promptly at 12p. I figure this allows her to sleep in, but keeps me from teaching their joint lessons more than once in a day. I put history in right after lunch break because it's a favorite subject and works well to pull their attention back to school topics.
1230p Break Most of our school day runs on a "work for 30 minutes/break for 15 minutes" rhythm. I have times in iCal just to give us something to shoot for. We're usually prompt with the 10a and 12p times, but the other start times tend to fluctuate more depending on how long it takes to move laundry etc. I do have the girls help with chores throughout the day as needed, but I always make sure they get the 15 minutes of break time.
1245p Structured Reading/Rosetta Stone Structured reading usually connected to our history unit. Rosetta Stone is Spanish. Each girl spends 15 minutes on each subject and they alternate. So when ODD is doing Rosetta Stone, YDD is reading.
115p Break/Mom Rosetta Stone I am putting my Spanish into iCal because it wasn't last year and I didn't do it. My goal is for all 3 of us to be fluent by the end of high school [2020 for ODD and 2022 for YDD].
130p Writing I've added this subject in this year because I think it's time ODD get some more structured writing instruction. While she is working through those assignments, YDD will be working on cursive [a subject she asked to learn].
215p Math This is the one subject with a 45 minute work period. My plan is for 30 minutes of Life of Fred work and 15 minutes of multiplication practice each day.
3p We are usually done with our school day by this time. ODD will be completing any subjects she missed in the morning at this time. I expect her to be doing her God Time studies, spelling or memory work, and read to self each day. She will likely power through those without taking a break.
5-530p We usually eat dinner in this time slot. We started eating at this time when DH worked nights; the meal was his breakfast and our dinner and we ate together. Then [because DS is an Aspie] we couldn't change the time [with Aspies if you do it once, you do it that way forever], and to be honest it suits us well. After eating our time is pretty unstructured. Some times we hang as a family, some times we disperse to our separate corners, and some times the girls go play while DH & I talk.
630p-730p The girls get ready for bed. This is shower time and jammies and brush teeth They are supposed to clean their room for 7 minutes, but some times I substitute another chore.
730-830p We call this Jamma Party Time. Primarily the girls and I are ready for bed and just read. ODD often draws, too. I love this wind down time; I think I need it more than the girls. We spend this time in our bedroom.
830p Lights out for YDD and me.
930p Lights out for ODD.
This summer I've been lax with the after dinner rhythm and it's something I need to crack down on as we move out of summer.
