In my life this week…I ran away to Great Wolf Lodge with my hubby and my girls for 3days/2nights. It was a very different kind of trip for us [I think this is our 4th or 5th time]. Our extrovert stayed home this trip and that changed the family dynamic tremendously. We wandered through all the stores. We would only spend 2 hours at a time in the water park. We had plenty of down-time in the room. None of this works when the boy is along. Another new aspect was that YDD went on Howlin' Tornado and LOVED it! She actually went on it 3 times, once with just her sister along for the ride.
One of the new experiences for us this trip was being there during their Halloween celebration. The girls got to trick or treat although their Momma was kind of lame and didn't even think about costumes until we got there. *sigh*
The last trick or treat station was a cookie and I loved the scarecrow costume.
Getting the youngest re-started with MagiQuest. She achieved Master Magi level this trip the same as her brother and sister.
ODD found a quiet, private place to listen to her iPod and draw.
YDD loved perching up here; she's eating some her her candy in this shot.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… this one I've put into daily practice this week: look at what you did and not at what you planned to do, but didn't. If I look at what wasn't done, this is a very depressing and discouraging week. If I look at what we did, there is much to find satisfaction in.
This week's art . . . ODD has been working with a couple of friends on drawing and writing their own manga. They are so excited about this project! These are a couple of the other girls' characters that ODD tried her hand at this week.
Favorite resource this week . . . another from PBS: Great Performances. I had recorded a couple of symphony performances, and that's what the girls listened to this week. I love having shows recorded and waiting for use. My girls are so willing to reroute to this kind of learning when they aren't feeling good. Wednesday, ODD was feeling awful with allergies so she listened to 3+ hours of symphonies and drew. I love being able to give the sick child a break without losing an entire day of instruction and being able to keep sick brains occupied [and thus less cranky].
What we are reading . . .
ODD say she enjoyed it, was only a little surprised by the story line and that is has a happily ever after ending.
I actually read this for an hour last night which was lovely. Hoping to get a bit more time in with it today as the girls engage in their self-directed studies.
YDD is not quite done with this, but is moving quickly through it. She would really suggest reading Percy Jackson first. SHe likes Rick Riordan because he likes tying in stories with myths.
Things I’m working on… getting stuff off my plate which is very very hard. One of the things I am working on is leaving my boy entirely in his father's hands. Each day my husband sends the boy an email about his jobs for the day. I used to remind and talk to him throughout the day trying to keep him on task. I am trying to let go of that habit which is easier said than done but so worth it when I've managed. Whatever the boy does or doesn't do is between him and Dad. If he doesn't get done what Dad asked when Dad asked, the boy loses the internet which he hates. I no longer try to help him avoid that consequence. We're also trying to use the Reminder feature in iCal for reminders for my husband. Babysteps that will hopefully have big payoff because if I don't get stuff off my plate, it is going to be catastrophic [my favorite word for the week].
I’m cooking… I burned dinner Wednesday night so we had store bought pizza bites for dinner. *sigh* Thursday YDD and I made steak and baked potatoes. Tonight I will be making beef stroganoff with ODD.
I’m thankful for… a song among other things this week. This morning, I am thankful for more sunny weather. I am thankful for a good steak dinner last night. I am thankful for the schooling we were able to fit into this short and disrupted week. I am thankful ODD's enthusiasm and work ethic with her art. I am thankful for YDD's skill at observation and her effort at getting even better at it. I am thankful I have willing learners. I am thankful I have avid readers. I am thankful for the chance to disciple my girls. I am thankful for all the time with my girls; I love that piece of homeschooling.
I’m praying for… wisdom for getting stuff off my plate. DH and I are really struggling to see what we can do differently even while we know things must be done differently.
